What I learnt studying at London School Of Theology
By Helena Cantrell
We love because he first loved us.’ – 1 John 4:19
Studying at the London School of Theology opened my eyes to the unconditional love of God. Nothing I do or do not do can make God love me any more or any less. Throughout the Old and New Testament God never stops loving his people, and continually re-establishes relationships with those who turn their back on him. Before studying theology I had a very authoritarian perspective of God, similarly to the elder brother in the parable of the prodigal son (Luke 15) I tried to serve God and obey his commands without fully understanding the unconditional dynamic of the relationship.
“Jesus’ whole life and preaching had only one aim: to reveal this inexhaustible, unlimited motherly and fatherly love of his God and to show the way to let that love guide every part of our daily lives.”
– Henri Nouwen.
It is only through truly understanding and accepting God’s unconditional love for me that I can begin to respond to this initial act of love by loving God with all my heart, soul and strength, and loving my neighbour as myself (Luke 10:27).
